Flexing My Writing Muscles

I have been thinking about writing over the past few days; not simply blogging (though I enjoy that very much!) but descriptive, narrative writing. Maybe even back into some fiction, I don't know. I have things to think about in that respect.

To that end I wanted to practice description. I thought I'd try it out while staying in a hotel by describing my hotel room. I wrote in my journal - this is almost verbatim.

Dispatches from City Redacted. Specifically we're at the hotel redacted. Google told us we took a trip through E.Y. My wife thinks it added more than 5 minutes to the trip but she didn't see that the highway exit I was supposed to take had us 30 minutes away, and when I missed the exit we were then 36 minutes away. It just seemed longer because of traffic lights & stops.

The hotel room. We're on the 17th floor - the top floor. Apparently it's the "south" tower. Without looking at a map I'd say our window is facing East. The sun is reflecting off a building facing us; and if we're in the south tower and the towers are parallel, then West is to its left, East to the right. So I think I'm correct.

The room itself is a weird one. Our door is in some corner away from the elevator, but you wouldn't know it from inside the room. The main area is basically a square; there's a king-size bed in the centre, a comfy-looking chair (which I haven't tried yet) immediately to the right of the door, with a desk beside the chair.

There's a dresser, TV, and mini fridge setup directly across from the bed. But here's where it gets...odd. There is a large bathroom beside the window and next to the dresser, but there is only a shower/tub combo and toilet inside.

The sink - the only sink - is on the other side of the wall, down a hallway where the closet is. If I were to draw a basic outline of the room it would be a square with two lines on top.

I actually drew that very square in my journal but I didn't feel like scanning it. If I were better with CSS or whatever I'd try to recreate it here, but...that would not be a good use of my time.

What do you think? Did I paint a decent enough picture for you? Do I still need some practice?1

  1. The answer to that is probably "yes".
