Week notes 2026-40
And just like that we're in October. On a personal level, week 24 started in the middle of the week. In 9 days my wife will have been pregnant for half a year! My mind is blown...there is so much we have yet to do. There's also a lot going on in our lives that we can't control that is interfering with our planning, but I don't want to get into that.
It was a good week though, with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in the middle to break up the work week. I'll be honest, I didn't do much reflection. However, given my wife is indigenous and I spent the day on her parents' reserve, and the health challenges my father-in-law faces and the lack of support available, it's safe to say that I think about the things some people only pay attention to one day a year.
I haven't done a lot of writing lately (if you look at my recent posts, most of them are these week notes!) but I had fun looking at the New York Times Top 100 Movies of the 21st Century and writing about it.
Beyond that, I've just been reading. My reading list is made up mostly of library books:
- Homestand: Small Town Baseball and the Fight for the Soul of America by Will Bardenwerper—I'm enjoying this one; it's about the town of Batavia, New York's collegiate ball team that formed in the wake of MLB's minor league contraction, and other thoughts along the way.
- The Notebook: A History of Thinking on Paper by Roland Allen—I think I heard of this from Carlos but I can't be sure. Ariadne is reading it as well! (and thank you for mentioning Atlas of the Heart, that sounds like a book I should look into.)
- And finally, Make Believe: On Telling Stories to Children by Mac Barnett. I haven't got into this one yet but it looks like a short read. Given I'm about to be a father in a little over 3 months this feels highly relevant.
I also checked out three comic book volumes from the library via Hoopla and I'm not sure where I'm going to find time to read everything 🤔
