Happenings
I like how Sylvia writes her weeknotes: short and succinct, with simple headings. I'm stealing her headings but I still need to learn the "short and succinct" part.
Last week my wife and I spent the week with her in-laws; her Dad was in the hospital and recently officially diagnosed with vascular dementia; he came home Wednesday so we're happy about that. He's happier. We were out on the boat Saturday and caught a couple of fish1.
I found it funny how my two different posts this week were received. I was most obvious about revealing my upcoming fatherhood in the first post about LEGO, but it was a reply post that caught on and people reached out to say congrats. What a way to find out how many people read your posts ;)
There was something else I was going to mention here but it flew out of my mind as soon as I switched tasks, so I'm ending it here.
Media & miscellania
- 🎬 Watched "The Man Trap" (Star Trek episode originally broadcast September 6 1966 (Canada). It was my first time watching the episode, knowing only about "the salt monster". It's a very strong episode, and it's fun seeing the SFX they came up with for the show. Everything feels real. Loved the glove puppet flower in Sulu's botany lab (probably the fact that he's a botanist is the strangest thing in the episode).
- Following up on this, I'm going to start some short write-ups of TV shows I've watched (new or old) on the blog in some form.
- 🎬 Watched Star Trek Strange New Worlds "The Griffin Incident" and "Human Best Friend". Two very different episodes with a vast gap in quality levels. If you've seen them both, you probably know which one I preferred the most. (It's "The Griffin Incident".)
- 📖 Continued reading "The Tapestry of Time" by Kate Heartfield. It's a World War II alternate history novel focusing on "second sight" which I guess is supernatural? Paranormal? Not sure. It's pulp reading for me; I've got less than a third of the novel left. Should finish soon.
- 🎮 Didn't play any games but I made some mental choices while driving yesterday: I'm going to start a new "franchise" mode for MLB The Show 2024 using the default rosters, controlling the Milwaukee Brewers
- 🎵 Some songs I heard: "I'm Still" by Bahamas (not a new one for me, but it's a good one); "Trouble" by Coldplay (new to me).
- ⌨️ Based on Andreas' rec of FUTO Keyboard I'm giving it a try on my phone; I like it, the first gboard alternative I've enjoyed. Some learning curve to it (mostly working around old habits and different button layout).
- ⌨️ Sad to see Robb is shutting down Echofeed; but I understand his reasoning. I'm currently debating whether or not I want to try self-hosting my own service or not. Robb might release the code for it (he made no promises) so will likely wait to see how that goes.
- ⌨️ My wife was cleaning out her Dad's room and sent me a box full of old tech to sort through. One of the things I found in the box was a pair of "wired" bluetooth headphones (so not like Apple Buds or Samsung Galaxy Buds). I've been considering some BT headphones for my iPod Touch for a while so this was serendipidous. So far I like them—similar sound quality to the wired Sony earbuds I was using.

- Continued work on LEGO # 77256-1, bags 2 & 3. Took some nice photos to put up on my project page.
