Wednesday Thoughts 16

I feel creatively bankrupt at the moment; when this happens I try turning to a general "thoughts" post to get some ideas out. These thoughts started on a Tuesday but spilled over to Wednesday. Work, etc.

Several years ago (I don't remember when) my wife gifted me an iPod Touch, 7th generation—the last generation. For a while it was running up-to-date iOS alongside the current iPhone lineup but it's been stuck in the past, on iOS 151. Many of the apps can no longer receive updates and there are many more I can't even install to begin with.

Still, it's a reliable device. I can load my music onto it from my MacBook, stream podcasts, radio stations, and Spotify. Despite the device being thinner than I'd like, it also looks good. The dark grey back looks great when I have it face down on my desk.

That's why I was very happy to discover there is a reddit community devoted to all the different interations of the device. I'd like to jailbreak my device but I haven't been able to figure out how to do it (there IS a way, though).

There's been a lot of change at work (I believe I mentioned this...at some point on the blog, I can't remember when), and other than added duties that I have to learn it also means fewer coworkers sitting in our shared area. I've always been an introverted person but I notice the difference now. Being in 5 days a week there's hardly ever anyone here.

So it's nice that I'm able to interact with some people who are completely outside my business unit. They're nice people and I'm glad they made the effort to introduce themselves (because I know I don't initiate anything).

It makes up for losing a large bulk of your coworkers in the span of 2 months a little easier.

I started cleaning up some of my LEGO collection. Much of it is coated in a layer of dust, primarily from being on display without being moved. I decided to clean the worst of it2 in some lukewarm water and set out the pieces to dry. I've done two bins' worth of cleaning but I'm going to stop there, only because it takes so long to dry.

I also bought three new bins from Wal-Mart. The plan here is to have same-size bins for all the LEGO. Right now it's going to be separated by theme (pirate + castle, space + Star Wars, etc.) but who knows what'll happen years down the road. If it gets mixed it's not going to bother me. I am 100% not sorting it by colour, or by piece, or separating by set3.

I have instructions for nearly everything so it can all be rebuilt. Some of the instructions have missing pieces—my brother took most of the Space sets and I'm pretty sure my niece has them.

I realized today that in English, we tend to ask "how are you?" or "how's it going?" when greeting someone. One of my French co-workers said "salut" in greeting, and I thought about responding with, "ça va bien?". It dawned on me that in French, we assume that things are good, but in English we aren't sure.

  1. 15.8.8 right now—it's still getting security updates!

  2. The worst offenders: Imperial Flagship # 6271, and the "Pirate Island" set.

  3. With the exception of "display" sets.
