Tuesday thoughts 07

My brain feels like mush this morning; I didn't want to get out of bed, and I definitely don't want to work. I'm doing it differently this morning: this is a list of things I'm looking forward to next week. My wife is away, so these are things to keep me occupied until she returns.

A day off. This vacation day comes with a caveat: it means that I have to work in the office on Friday to meet my 4 day commitment. Normally I would blow it off and work from home anyway, but since I've been working remotely since Friday, and will do so for the rest of this week, it's fair that I put in the required time. This day off is also meant to facilitate taking our cars in for tire change appointments without having to rush to get to work while shuttling between locations.

It will be a busy day, but it means that I can occupy the time spent waiting for the cars to be ready by doing what I want instead of working.

Video games. This week I split my time playing NHL 25 and Star Trek Resurgence (STR) via PS5 remote play; but because I insist on playing games with discs (Resurgence being the exception, because it was on sale for $ 15), I can't play Star Wars Outlaws. I took a necessary break from the game but I'm ready to return to it - in small doses.

But after playing STR for an episode last night, it reminded me that this is a game I enjoy because of the passive nature. It's an interactive Star Trek episode; I think that because the developers didn't need to put a lot of graphic coding related to gameplay into it, they were able to animate some lovely backgrounds and character detail. I still recommend it.

Movies. I have had Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) on my watchlist for a long time. I believe it was on Netflix for a spell but I delayed watching it until it was too late. Since watching Nosferatu (2024) two weeks ago it renewed my interest, and to my delight I discovered that Dracula is available on Crave1. I meant to watch it around Halloween, but wasn't able to carve out time for it (thanks to the World Series). I discovered via one of the co-hosts of Transporter Room 3 that it was originally released in November, so it's OK to watch later than Halloween.

I look forward to contrasting to Nosferatu, because that movie is a direct retelling of the Dracula story (while also being a retelling of the 1922 film).

TV shows. It's been a minute since I've sat down and watched shows on my list. Andor is one of those shows I badly want to watch; I opted to re-watch season 1 before starting the 2nd season and I have one episode left of season 1 left. There's also X-Files, I think Only Murders in the Building might be back, and I may be able to catch up with the last season of Star Trek Lower Decks.

Writing. As I read "On Writing Well" by William Zinsser I'm generating ideas for things to write (almost too many ideas), so I want to get some of them out of my head. I may finish reading through the book this week so one of those things would be writing a review.

That is all I can think of but that is a packed list. I have the whole week, or at least 5 days, to "get through" it. At the same time I don't want to rush through things, I want to take my time. If that means one of the items occupies more of my time than another, that's fine. The point is I don't have a shortage of things to do.
