Sunday, or: How I Did Everything Wrong

I had a very bad day yesterday (Sunday). I started off with very little sleep; that was a choice, and a bad one. I went to bed Saturday - technically Sunday - very late, and woke up getting only ~6 hours of sleep.1 Sunday, then, turned into a day of mistakes.

It started out okay. Made a coffee, made breakfast for my mother-in-law (who is recovering from total hip replacement surgery), relaxed. That's not a bad morning. I got some laundry started and swept the floors. That's pretty good!

But here comes the first mistake of the day; I needed to go into town to pick up some extra groceries. To get to the closest town, you need to cross a one-way swing bridge, which swings on the hour, every hour, for about 20 minutes. I just got onto the island before the bridge swung, which was great! I got what I needed at the grocery store, then took my time getting out of the parking lot because I knew the bridge was likely still open for boats.

Of course, it was, and even though I waited a little bit, traffic was backed up far longer than I've seen it in a long time. People leaving the island from vacation, I guess. So that took me an extra 10 minutes to get off the island. I wasn't in a hurry, so this isn't the worst mistake I could have made. Oh well.

Mistake number two: I inadvertently stepped on part of a charging cord that was on the floor, and broke it while it was in the tablet it was charging. Frustrating, because we paid $70 for this universal charger. The charger itself is fine, it's just the attachment that broke, but that means we now can't charge this tablet until we find a replacement.2 I tried fixing it, but it didn't take. I eventually went down for a nap, which made this a somewhat net neutral sequence of events.

Mistake number three: This one came while peeling potatoes. I was only on potato number 2 when the peeler slipped and took a pretty sizeable chunk out of the tip of my finger. It bled profusely and I couldn't get it to stop. Eventually I stuck enough gauze and tape on it to keep the blood contained, and I could safely peel & cut the potatoes. But even this morning, after taking off the bandaging (I did a better job with it after, don't worry) to change it, there was still some bleeding. Well, it's patched up again. Hoping to leave it as long as possible so that it closes up.

Mistake number four: We had fresh fish for dinner, caught by my sister-in-law and her friend3. I was tasked to fry the fish, and that all went well - it just wasn't as crisp as I'd like it to be. But naturally this creates a large amount of oil & grease leftover to be disposed of. Later that night when it had cooled and I was cleaning up, I took it outside to pour into a jug...and proceeded to spill a ton of it. All over. It splattered onto my new pair of leather sandals.

I tried a trick I found online, rubbing baking soda into the leather and leaving overnight. I haven't taken a look at them yet to see if that helped, partly because I don't want to look at them to discover it didn't work. They are Shrödinger's grease stains.

It wasn't all bad. I made some progress in The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap; that game is growing on me, after I was initially put off by some annoying game mechanics. It was something I could look forward to. But not enough to remove the sting of the mistakes.

Today is a new day, a new week. It rained hard early this morning, hopefully washing away yesterday's bad karma.

  1. Technically this is the first mistake, but I'm lumping it into Saturday.

  2. I found a replacement online for $30. I'll be ordering that next week.

  3. Pretty sure that's boyfriend but she hasn't said anything official...
