re: Lacking Job, Lacking Motivation
Just read this post from Matt:
Lacking Job, Lacking Motivation
His post is about not feeling motivated to do some of the things he wants to because he lacks structure elsewhere in life (provided by a regular job).
I completely understand where he's coming from. I wrote last year about how I was spending my time:
Granted this was from voluntary time off - not as a result of being unemployed. I think what this and Matt's post shows is that sometimes having structure and delineated time helps us focus on how we want to spend our "leisure" time, or the time between commitments.
When time is an abundant commodity it's hard to know how to spend it wisely; I'm just now viewing it as comparable to making movies on a limited budget: when you don't have a lot to work with, you're forced to come up with creative solutions to achieve your vision. When given a virtually blank cheque, you feel like you can do anything, but throwing All The Money at something might mean you're not spending it efficiently and may achieve an objectively worse result.
Recently I had some time to myself while my wife was on a board meeting; I had every intention of playing a bit of Star Wars Outlaws before switching to catching up on some TV episodes I wanted to watch. Instead I ended up playing for probably an hour and a half, never got to any TV shows, and at the end of my play session I didn't feel completely satisfied.
I had fun playing the game, but I also felt like I wasted my time. A weird feeling.
