On Keurig Coffee Pods
For the longest time, Keurig Pods (or K-Cups) have been (rightfully) derided for their negative environmental impact. So, Keurig made a change in recent years to try to be better. Most, if not all, K-Cups include directions on the box for how to properly dispose of your K-Cup.1 To save you a click: tear off the foil top (throw this part in the garbage), dump your coffee grinds into the green bin, recycle the rest.
Am I the only one that finds it nearly impossible to take the foil off? I've come across some pods that tell you to pop the foil and filter out of the pod, but these are few and far between. Is there an easy trick to getting the grinds out?
I usually don't get all the grinds out, so quite a few of them get rinsed down the sink2. In my mind it would make sense to just dump the whole filter, grinds and all, in the green bin, but the directions say to leave the filter when you recycle.
I know, I know. Environmentally it would be better to NOT use Keurig machines at all. But it's hard to beat the convenience. I still have a french press that I use when I have the time.
In the meantime, anyone have any tricks for properly disposing K-Cups?
