On biking to work

I used to bike to work a lot. My ride to the office was a breezy 15 minutes (max 20, usually because it was hot). But then my workplace moved.

All last summer I was determined to bike to work at least once a week but I never made it. The ride is a little daunting: just under an hour1, most likely at moderate speeds (20-25 km/h), which means I would need to bring a change of clothes with me. I still did that when I had the short bike ride, but in theory if I took a more leisurely pace I could probably do it in work clothes.

I don't have any side bags for this so I have to carry everything in my backpack and this includes my laptop, notebooks, and would need to include a lunch. My backpack is pretty large but it doesn't fit all these things comfortably. Well...the last time I used it for biking that was the case. I have to try again.

The thing is, I enjoy biking and I want to bike to work. I recently got my bike out of the storage unit but have yet to make sure it's ready for a first ride. I intend to do that tonight when I have plenty of time, and my further intent is to bike to the office Thursday. With a caveat.

I have access to light rail transit minutes away from my house and it's designed to allow you to bring your bike on the train with you. So I'm going to do that - bike ~10 minutes to the station, hop on the train, and then bike the rest of the way to the office from the final transit stop. If I feel up to it I could probably get off 1-2 stops earlier for a slightly longer ride.

In theory - emphasis on "theory" - I should be able to do this in office clothes. I'm not sure I will, just in case. I'll see how it goes.

  1. I've done rides this long before, it's not the length of the ride itself but rather the length of the ride to work, specifically.
