Handmade notebook test #1

Ever since I went down the homemade notebook rabbit hole, I wanted to make one for my wife as a special gift. We both like notebooks - it would be pretty cool if I made one for her.

But I needed some practice first, so what I went with was a simple staple stitched book made from loose leaf lined paper. Images below.

It was rather simple. I didn't want to include the hole punches in the margin so I used a blade to trim those off (in retrospect, I should have used our bigger cutter to make things easier). I folded all the pages in half to make the notebook pages, and put them together.

Then I clipped two of the sides together to keep them together while I punched tiny holes with an awl in the centre folds. I had already prepped three staples to go into these holes. I popped them in, then folded the "arms" closed with an eraser tip.

I went back to the blade and trimmed the overlapping edges so that it looks nice and neat. It looks pretty good for something I whipped together in something like 15 or 20 minutes.

This is the video I followed to get started: DIY Staple Saddle Stitch Bookbinding|Sea Lemon (YouTube)

Here's how it turned out! A lined sheet of paper folded in half, resting on a purple cutting mat with grid lines. A green and silver stapler is in the background on a dark surface.
