New Discovery: Rosemary Mosco
With the recent news that Meta and Google are pulling Canadian news links from links and searches, I realized that I'm not really keeping tabs on what's going on in the news. Specifically local news - I unsubscribed from breaking news alerts and never really open the apps I have at my disposal unless I happen to hear about something or need something to read. Then I remembered RSS feeds and how I'm under-using them.
I added CBC and CTV feeds to my list in Feedly and I read through the articles selectively. One article today stood out: For this Canadian cartoonist, art is a way to process climate anxiety. That artist is Rosemary Mosco.
The article links to a couple of different comics, and I thought both were great. The first one was about the famed Rideau Canal not opening for the first time in 50 years; the second was about how her phone autocorrects bird names.1
Her artwork is great, very vivid. I'll have to read more of her work. I also love that she was inspired by Calvin and Hobbes growing up - that's probably my all-time favourite newspaper comic.
So, go, read her stuff! It's not often I find new webcomics, let alone webcomics that grab my attention.
This also introduced me to the website "The Nib" - something I need to explore.↩
