Monday Thoughts 06

I'm trying to balance distraction and getting work done today, so I have ideas for things to write but they're not getting the chance to finish percolating. So...thoughts.

Actually I'm struggling now to figure out what even to write out in separate thoughts! I know that there are a few topics tumbling around in my head that I want to tackle:

I have a post already written that I am sitting on; I feel that it's in good shape and I wrote it to the best of my ability, but there are one or two things in it that are not quite ready for the public.

I dunno, I think I have just done more of my writing in my journal, for me, so I'm temporarily out of topics to post online.

Last night I found a couple of puzzle games for my phone. They're both a kind of puzzle game; one is called Arrows, where you have to clear a bunch of arrows pointing in different directions from a grid. The strategy that comes into play is figuring out which arrow to move first (they're all squiggly arrows and it's not always clear what direction they're really pointing). The other game I found was this "10000 offline games" app that has...well, a lot of games. The one I've been playing almost exclusively is this "Nuts and bolts" game that has many other variations of what you have to match.

You have two empty "bolts" you have to move coloured "nuts" onto; you can move any colour to empty bolts, but you can only move like colours to like colours (e.g. red can go to red, but not yellow). It's simple enough but takes some concentration to figure out when it gets difficult.

My problem with both: they have those ads for games where you move the character around the screen collecting wood or meat or whatever to earn coins and build more things. The ads stay on the screen for a long time before you can continue to the next level.

I would be OK with these ads, except that they stay on the screen for an indeterminate amount of time (some have a countdown, but not most), and the 'close' buttons don't seem to show up. I can't figure it out. But also...for the "offline" game app? I bet that it would break and not work if you turned your data off and can't display ads.

Unlike many people, I have no problem with ads—unless they are intrusive, like I mentioned above.

Saying all that, it appears there are free-to-play mini games available on Google Play Games. These have no ads and are more of the 'time waste' type of games. I'm playing one right now where you mine for diamonds to power your rocket...or something. It is completely mindless and requires no strategy. And yet I'm addicted.
