Merciless

Just now I tossed out a magazine I've had for at least a month now. It was sitting on the floor in my home office. I had every intention of reading it, but I never got around to it. So I decided - if I hadn't read it by now, I wasn't going to read it. I did the same thing on the weekend with a community newspaper. I meant to read it, but never got around to it; so I tossed it1.

Why don't I do this with books? Not throw them out I mean, but get them out of the house. I guess one difference is that I eventually get to them, it just takes me longer to do so. But when I go looking at my shelf, picking the next book, there are certain books on the shelf I know I just skip. "Not this time," I think to myself. "I'll get to this another time."

I feel like I should be as merciless with books as I am with magazines and newspapers, but for some reason it's harder. Well, I am doing the next best thing - giving up on books that aren't engaging. If it doesn't interest me I'll mark it as "did not finish" and move on, getting rid of the book at that point.

Hey, at least I'm giving it a shot.

  1. Although, since paper recycling isn't until next week, I might pull it out of the bin...
