Following Up On Hobbies

Last week I had a short rant about figuring out how to find time for my hobbies; shortly after Brandon wrote a response which was very thoughtful and full of self-reflection. I had a few other responses on Mastodon as well.

In the week since I posted that, I did buy a PS5 and I have played several games of NHL 25 in short bursts. It helps that I'm playing games using 3 minute periods, so I can fit in more games than if I used 5 minute periods (which I believe is the default for online games, which I haven't played yet).

I've also done some more reading of my current read, The Great Train Robbery. Mostly I carve out time at lunch while I'm eating away from my desk to do this, and I get 1-3 chapters in depending on length / my attention span on the day. As far as writing goes, I've clearly done a lot of that - including today. And I'm doing my best to write in my personal journal that doesn't get shared online.

The only thing I haven't done is make time to go outdoors to take photos like I did last week. This week's challenge is leading lines, which I love doing; I just haven't taken the time to go outside and look. I'm using the excuse that I want to use my digital camera instead of my phone, and I don't carry that around very much. On the flip side I don't think I've missed any opportunities because I "only" had my cell phone on me. I'm just not looking for them.

The whole 'making time for hobbies' comes down to two things:

  1. You'll find time for what's important to you (and what's important to you changes often, sometimes daily)
  2. It's a matter of perspective - often times you're making more time for them than you think unless you do some self-reflection.

And also, don't sell yourself short!
