Figuring Out my Creative Outlets
While driving home on the highway, just outside of Deep River, I was listening to a bonus episode of Decoding TV: MovieTok and the Future of Criticism. I didn't get all the way through yet but I thought the three hosts made some insightful comments about how they got started over a decade ago vs what someone has to do now in order to get a following or get paid to do what they love. Basically the barrier to entry keeps getting changed and things that worked 5 years ago don't work now.
Anyway it got me thinking about my goals with my writing and podcasting. I don't want to make a living from it - as in, make this my full-time job. Rather, I would like to make a little bit of money to supplement my income. Plus, I put a lot of work into what I do, it would be nice to get recognition / reward.
But I am all over the place online. I write actively in 4 different places! So I have come up with what I think is a good plan to put all of this together.
- This space (Bear) is for mostly journalling-type / random posts
- Long-form stuff that I feel are more "formal" will go onto my Medium page - under the premium content paywall1.
- A week later, those same essays will appear on my WordPress blog.
- ???
In general I would like to come up with more ways to generate some (modest) income from my writing. I'm writing an essay compilation right now; I'm not sure what will happen with it when I'm done though. Ideally? It'll be a published book. But who knows?
And none of that touches on what I do with podcasting. That's another subject for another time. I have ideas for those, too.
The hitch in this part of the plan is that I need to be a paying member of Medium to join the partner program, so this isn't in effect yet.↩
