Blog Questions Challenge: Technology Edition

I was tagged for this challenge by noisy deadlines.

When did you first get interested in technology?

I can't remember exactly what age I was first interested in technology, but I was very young. I've been using computers for as far back as I remember in the late 80s, starting with a reliable MS-DOS system and playing some great Apogee games. I also remember wanting to play games on my Aunt & Uncle's computer, as well as my Grandfather's. Is it any wonder I'm always using computers today?

I also learned various bits of coding from my brothers. BASIC was where I started, but my oldest brother showed me how to create HTML documents and host them online with our Internet provider. It was all very simple at the time, all text-based using the Lynx browser; but that was the foundation which led me to more HTML learning as I grew up (and when we later graduated to a computer running Win95 in 1998).

What's Your Favourite Piece of Technology All-Time?

I should think it's obvious from my first answer: the personal computer. It's so versatile. We were able to do so many things with a computer even with MS-DOS - I remember using Print Shop Pro to design greeting cards, banners to print out on a dot matrix printer...yeah it's easier to do that now, but just knowing that we were able to do really cool things like that with such basic computer systems is a little mind blowing.

And the things you could do with limited space! Scarcity breeds creativity, for sure. That's why I think a lot of the older games are sometimes better or at least more creative than games today, because they were able to do so much with so little.

What's Your Favourite Piece of Technology Right Now?

It's a toss-up between my shiny new PS5 and my private server & Linux box I just set up on the weekend. I love all the stuff you can do with the PS5 and the way it brings gamers together virtually the way you used to get together with friends when you were a kid. Sharing gameplay videos from my hockey and baseball games with my friend is fun. But tech tinkering is fun too! And my server & Linux box are scratching that itch.

Name One New Cool Piece of Technology We'll Have in 25 Years!

I'm not a prognosticator, at all. The only tech I thought of when I was younger that is even sort of in existence today is music streaming. When I was in college/university I always thought that I would pay a monthly fee to be able to download all the music I wanted, rather than paying à la carte. Of course, I meant it in the sense that I would still own the downloaded music, not the streaming setup we have now. How naïve of me.

Final Thoughts

I love technology and I love playing with it. It turns out that 2025 is the Year of Tech Tinkering for me and I couldn't be happier. It's empowering to figure out the way things work and then putting everything together to do what you want to do.

I won't lie, I lean on other people's guides (thanks Sylvia!) and ChatGPT for help; but I try my best to understand as I go along.

Edit: apparently my link didn't work before!
